What to Pack for Mentawai: The Complete Packing List (2026)
Knowing what to pack for Mentawai can make or break your trip. Siberut Island is remote — the nearest town with a proper supermarket is Padang, a 3–6 hour ferry ride away. Whether you are joining a surf camp or a tribe cultural tour, this guide covers everything you need — and what you can safely leave at home.
Already Provided by Pulau Asli Tour
On all tribe tours, boat shoes, mosquito nets, and insect repellent are already provided — you do not need to bring your own. This keeps your pack light and your preparation simple. See full inclusions on each tribe tour package page.
The Golden Rule: Pack Light
Mentawai is not a resort destination. Getting here involves a public ferry from Muaro Padang (departing Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 07:00), followed in many cases by a speedboat, jungle trail, or river crossing. Oversized suitcases are a genuine problem — they do not fit through jungle paths and are awkward on narrow ferry decks.
A soft-sided duffel bag of 60–80 litres and a 20-litre daypack is the ideal combination for a 3–7 day trip. Everything in this list fits comfortably within that allowance. If you are packing for both a surf and a tribe tour, remember: surfing and tribe tours cannot be done on the same day — locations are approximately 3 hours apart by combined land and sea travel. Plan your kit for one activity at a time.
Essential Gear for All Visitors
Regardless of whether you are surfing or trekking with the tribe, these items belong in every Mentawai bag:
- Travel insurance documents — must cover medical evacuation and adventure activities
- Passport + copies — keep one physical copy separate from the original
- Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) cash — no ATMs on Siberut; withdraw in Padang before departure
- Malaria prophylaxis — consult your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel
- Prescription medication — bring more than you need; re-supply is impossible on the island
- Lightweight waterproof rain jacket — compact, packable; brief tropical showers happen even in dry season
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ — reef-safe formula strongly preferred
- Sunglasses + hat/buff — UV exposure on the water is intense
- Reusable water bottle (1+ litre) — safe drinking water is provided at all camps
- Headlamp + spare batteries — village power is limited or absent; torch on your head is far more useful than a phone flashlight
- Small padlock — for your duffel zipper during ferry transit
- Stomach medication — rehydration salts, anti-diarrhoea tablets, antacids
- Hand sanitiser + wet wipes

Clothing Checklist: What to Wear in Mentawai
Mentawai sits just 1.5 degrees south of the equator. Temperature stays around 28–32°C year-round. The goal is lightweight, quick-dry, and protective:
- 3–4 lightweight quick-dry t-shirts or breathable shirts
- 2 pairs quick-dry shorts or lightweight trousers
- 1–2 long-sleeve shirts for evening (insect protection)
- 1 pair long lightweight trousers (tribe trek essential — protects against insects and thorns)
- Comfortable walking sandals or trail shoes for camp use
- Flip-flops / thongs for beach and indoor use
- Swimwear (2 sets so one is always dry)
- Lightweight fleece or thin hoodie for air-conditioned ferry journey and cool evenings
- Underwear (quick-dry fabric; 4–5 pairs is sufficient)
Avoid bright colours on tribe treks — they attract insects. Neutral tones (khaki, olive, grey) are practical. Formal or smart clothing is unnecessary at any point during your Mentawai trip.
Surf Camp Packing List: Specific Items for Surfers
Mentawai's reef breaks are world-class but demand the right equipment. If you are joining one of our surf camp packages, add these to your list. For detailed gear advice see the Mentawai surfing FAQ.
- Rashguard (long-sleeve + short-sleeve) — UV protection and reef rash prevention
- Reef booties (3mm) — sharp coral is the primary hazard at most Mentawai breaks
- Surf leash (spare) — bring a backup; replacements are not available locally
- Surf wax (warm water formula) — warm tropical water; bring enough for 7 days
- Fin key + spare fins (FCS/Futures plugs)
- Board shorts or bikini (2–3 sets)
- After-sun lotion or aloe vera gel — reef cuts and sunburn heal faster with treatment
- Waterproof camera or GoPro + mounts + spare memory cards
- Waterproof bag/dry bag (10–20L) for boat transfers
Surfboard: You can bring your own board — note that the ferry from Muaro Padang charges a separate surfboard fee which is NOT included in the surf camp price. Alternatively, surfboard rental is available via our certified partner at Rp 200,000–350,000 per day. Ask us when you book via the booking page.
Tribe Tour Packing List: What to Bring for the Forest
The Mentawai tribe tours take you deep into the jungle of Siberut, directly bordering the 403,000-hectare Siberut National Park. Packing right is about comfort and respect — not equipment overload.
Already provided by Pulau Asli Tour — do NOT bring your own:
- Boat shoes (water-grip sandals for river crossings)
- Mosquito nets
- Insect repellent
Bring for the tribe tour:
- Lightweight daypack (20L) for daily trekking
- Long-sleeve shirt + long trousers (insect + thorn protection on forest trails)
- Sturdy closed-toe shoes or trail runners (in addition to the boat shoes provided)
- Quick-dry towel (compact microfibre)
- Basic toiletries in small travel sizes (no need for full-size products)
- Camera or phone in a waterproof case — rivers and rain are frequent
- Small gifts for the community (optional but appreciated: stationery, fishing line, basic medicines — ask Andrian for current suggestions)
- Personal snacks if you have dietary restrictions
- Cash (IDR) for any optional extras, including the traditional Sikerei tattoo (permanent, extra cost, must request at time of booking)

What NOT to Bring to Mentawai
Overpacking is the most common mistake first-time visitors make. Leave these behind:
- Valuables and jewellery — no secure storage in jungle villages; leave expensive items at your hotel in Padang
- Hard-shell suitcases — impossible on jungle trails and narrow ferry gangways
- Formal or smart clothes — you will not need them at any point
- Hair dryer or electrical styling tools — limited power in tribe villages; surf camps have basic power only
- Large amounts of single-use plastic — Siberut has no waste management infrastructure; help keep it clean
- Drone — requires special permits in National Park buffer zones; ask us before bringing one
- Alcohol in large quantities — respect local culture and customs in tribe villages
Mentawai forest is significantly safer than most tropical jungles. There are no crocodiles, bears, or tigers in Mentawai. The only animals present are snakes and wild boar — and the risk of either attacking a human is extremely low. There are no recorded incidents of tourists being harmed by wildlife on Siberut. With Andrian's team accompanying you at all times, the forest is safe and accessible.

Should I bring cash to Mentawai?
