Best Time to Surf Mentawai: Month-by-Month Season Guide (2026)

I was born on Siberut Island and have spent 15 years running surf and tribe trips across Mentawai. Between my direct local knowledge and Johan's daily surf operations, we have a detailed picture of how conditions shift month to month across all 16 breaks in our zone. This is my honest month-by-month account of when to come, who it suits, and what to realistically expect.

The short answer: June to August is peak season — most consistent swell, offshore winds all day, waves firing at Kandui, Rifles, and E-Bay. But that's not the full story. For many surfers, April, May, or September are actually better choices. Let me explain why.

Why Mentawai Has Such Consistent Surf

Before I go month by month, you need to understand why Mentawai works the way it does. The Mentawai Islands sit 150 km off the west coast of Sumatra, directly in the path of the Southern Indian Ocean swell corridor. This is the same stretch of ocean that sends energy toward Western Australia, South Africa, and the southern tip of South America — except Mentawai has no landmass interrupting the swell before it hits the reef.

Southwest swells travel 5,000+ kilometres of open ocean, building period and power the entire way. When they reach Mentawai's ancient coral reef system, that energy transforms into long-period, well-shaped waves with real power — not the chopped-up, short-interval wind swell you get at most beach breaks around the world.

From June through August, the Southeast Trade Winds blow offshore — which means wave faces are groomed clean from morning through early afternoon. This combination of consistent swell direction, long period, shaped reef, and offshore wind is why Mentawai produces world-class surf from April to October with mechanical reliability that few destinations can match.

Water temperature stays 27–29°C year-round. No wetsuit needed. Ever.

Mentawai Surf Season Month by Month

Here is what actually happens each month — not marketing copy, but what I observe on the water every year.

April

Season start — uncrowded, consistent, building. The Southern Ocean starts sending its first serious swells of the year. Expect waist-to-overhead surf with glassy morning sessions. Wind is calmer and more variable than peak season — some days are perfect glass all day. Crowds are light; you'll often have breaks to yourselves. Best month for intermediate surfers who want to progress without pressure. Average swell: 3–5 ft. Wind: light, variable.

May

Excellent surf, still quiet. Swell is building toward peak season consistency. May often delivers some of the year's cleanest sessions — enough swell for real quality, not yet enough crowds to congest lineups. Afternoons can be choppy as SE trade winds start establishing. Morning sessions are gold. This is personally one of my favourite months to be out on the water. Average swell: 4–6 ft.

June

Peak season begins — waves firing, winds offshore all day. June marks the full establishment of SE trade winds. Conditions at breaks like E-Bay, Bankvaults, Hideaways, and Baby Kandui are consistently world-class. Waves are powerful with long, shaped walls. Crowds are noticeably higher than April–May — this is when boat charters arrive in numbers. Book 2–3 months ahead. Average swell: 4–8 ft.

July

The best single month for wave quality and consistency. July is when Mentawai peaks. Swell is most consistent and powerful. SE trade winds blow offshore from first light. Kandui Left and Rifles fire on their best swells of the year during this month. This is also when surf media crews film here. If your goal is maximum wave count and optimal quality, July is the month. Come prepared: lineups at the famous breaks are busier. Average swell: 5–10 ft, some bigger.

August

Peak season — still firing, crowds starting to thin. August is essentially July slightly softened: swell is still consistent and powerful, winds are still offshore, but charter boats begin heading home toward the end of the month. A great choice if you want peak-season quality with slightly less competition in the lineups. Average swell: 4–8 ft.

September

Hidden gem month — big swells, empty lineups. The charter boats have mostly left. Crowds drop dramatically. But the Southern Ocean is still very active — September regularly produces some of the biggest swells of the year. If you're an experienced intermediate or advanced surfer who wants serious waves without fighting 20 boats for a peak, September is exceptional. Wind becomes more variable; morning sessions are best. Average swell: 4–8 ft, occasional 10 ft+.

October

Season wind-down — smaller but still good. Swell becomes less consistent as the Southern Ocean cools. You'll still get fun overhead sessions, but the frequency drops. Wind switches direction more often. October is best for surfers with flexible schedules who can wait for the good days, or for those who combine surfing with tribe tours since the forest is drier. Average swell: 2–5 ft, inconsistent.

November — March

Wet season — smaller surf, unpredictable conditions. The wet season brings rain, onshore winds, and irregular swell. Waves exist but quality and consistency drop significantly. This is not our primary surf season. That said, December and January occasionally surprise with clean swells — and you'll have Mentawai almost entirely to yourself. Best for very flexible travellers who prioritise solitude over conditions. Average swell: 1–4 ft, inconsistent.

Best Month by Skill Level

Beginner surfers

Best months: April, May, early June. You want consistent but manageable waves and uncrowded lineups. April and May deliver waist-to-overhead surf at breaks like Bengbeng, Good Times, and Burgerworld — perfect for learning to read reef waves without the intimidation of peak-season swell. I keep beginners away from advanced breaks regardless of season, but smaller swell months make the whole experience more relaxed and confidence-building.

Intermediate surfers

Best months: May, June, September. Intermediate surfers get the most out of Mentawai when swell is consistent enough to give them 20–30 waves per session, but not so big that you're spending half your time getting worked. May and September are ideal: quality swell, real power, long wave walls at E-Bay, Bankvaults, and Baby Kandui, without the peak-season lineups. June works well too — just be ready for more company at the better-known breaks.

Advanced surfers

Best months: July, August, September. If you're chasing Kandui Left, Rifles, Hideaways, or Shadow Right at their best, come in July. The swell is most powerful and consistent, the winds are perfectly offshore, and the wave quality is genuinely world-class. September is a hidden gem for advanced surfers: big swell, empty lineups, no charter traffic. If you want the best waves with the fewest people, September might be the single best month on the calendar.

How We Plan Your Trip Around Conditions

When you book a Mentawai surf camp with Pulau Asli Tour, I monitor swell forecasts from the moment you confirm your dates. I look at 7–10 day models from multiple buoy and satellite data sources. No swell forecast is perfect out here — the ocean decides — but the local knowledge I've built up over years of surfing every break in this area means I can read conditions and move quickly.

If one break is blown out, I take you to another. If conditions are better further along the coast in the morning, we motor there. The boat is included in your package — surf breaks are 5–30 minutes from camp by speedboat. That flexibility is the biggest advantage of a camp-based trip over a land-based resort with a fixed schedule.

Pricing is the same year-round — there are no seasonal markups. A June trip and an April trip cost the same. You choose your timing based on conditions, not price. Check the Mentawai surf FAQ for more on what to expect.

Getting the Ferry Timing Right

Andrian Salis with Mentawai Sikerei shaman, Siberut Island — start your journey from Padang
Andrian meets guests at the Padang port before the fast ferry to Siberut. Andrian handles all logistics — airport pickup, ferry tickets, transfers.

The fast ferry from Muaro Padang runs Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 07:00. Crossing takes 3–6 hours depending on weather and sea conditions. This is a fixed schedule — your trip dates need to align with ferry days. Andrian coordinates all tickets and transfers, so you don't need to navigate this yourself.

Plan to arrive in Padang the night before your ferry. Andrian picks you up from your hotel or the airport (BIM) and transfers you to Muaro Padang port in time for the 07:00 departure. Everything — ferry tickets, transfers, camp pickup on the Siberut side — is included in your package.

Bringing your own surfboard? The Mentawai Fast ferry charges a surcharge for surfboards — this is paid separately at the port and is not included in the package price. Most airlines accept surfboards as sporting equipment on the flight to Padang. Alternatively, board rental through our certified partner costs Rp 200,000–350,000 per day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to surf Mentawai?

June to August is the peak season — most consistent swell, offshore SE trade winds all day, and the best wave quality at breaks like Kandui, Rifles, E-Bay, and Hideaways. For uncrowded conditions with excellent quality, April–May and September are equally worth considering, particularly for intermediate surfers.

Can you surf Mentawai year-round?

Yes — waves exist year-round, but quality and consistency drop significantly from November to March (wet season). Primary surf operations at Pulau Asli Tour run April through October. The wet season is possible for very flexible travellers, but the experience is not comparable to the main season.

Is April a good month to surf Mentawai?

Yes, April is excellent — especially for intermediates. Swell is building, conditions are often glassy, and crowds are minimal. You'll have breaks largely to yourself and wave quality that is genuinely good. It is one of the most underrated months in Mentawai.

When is the least crowded time to surf Mentawai?

April, May, and September have the lowest crowds relative to wave quality. Most charter boats don't operate in April–May, and they leave by mid-September. If you want empty lineups with good surf, these three months are your best options.

How far in advance should I book a Mentawai surf trip?

For June–August, book 2–3 months in advance minimum. For shoulder season (April–May, September–October), 4–6 weeks is usually fine, but earlier is always better. Submit a booking inquiry directly — Andrian will confirm availability and advise dates before you commit to flights.

What surfboard should I bring to Mentawai?

Johan recommends bringing two boards: a shortboard (6'0"–6'4" for most conditions) and a fish or mid-length for smaller days and beginner-friendly breaks. Reef breaks reward boards that are fast and responsive. If you only bring one, go with what you're most comfortable on. Rental boards (Rp 200,000–350,000/day) are available through our certified partner if you prefer not to travel with boards.
