Mentawai Surf Breaks: 15 Waves, Swell Patterns & Conditions
The complete guide to every major Mentawai surf break — wave type, swell direction, skill level, and how to access them. Written by Johan, who has surfed these waters every week for over a decade.

Why Mentawai Is the World's Best Surf Destination
Mentawai Islands sit directly in the path of the Southern Ocean swell machine. Located off the west coast of Sumatra in West Sumatra province, Indonesia, the archipelago catches long-period groundswells that have traveled thousands of kilometres across open ocean — arriving with power, shape, and consistency that is almost impossible to find anywhere else on Earth.
I've been surfing here since I was a teenager. The breaks don't close out. The channels are deep. The water is warm. And because the islands run north-south along an exposed coastline, there is almost always a break working somewhere — from the mellowest beginner reef to the most powerful barrel on the planet.
Every dollar you spend goes directly to the local Mentawai community. When you surf with Pulau Asli Tour, you're not funding a resort chain — you're supporting the people who actually live here.
Surf breaks are 5–30 minutes from camp by speedboat. All camps provide daily boat access. Guesthouse guests require a sampan to reach the speedboat — surf breaks are not walkable from any camp.

The Breaks in Detail
1. Macaronis — The Benchmark
Macaronis is perhaps the most photographed wave in Mentawai. A long, walling left reef that peels with mechanical precision on a south or southwest swell. At 3–6 feet it's a dream wave for intermediate to advanced surfers — multiple sections to work, a fast inside bowl, and a channel that makes it easy to paddle back out. At 8+ feet it becomes one of the most demanding waves in the archipelago.
2. HT's (Hollow Trees) — The Crown Jewel
HT's is widely regarded as the most perfect left-hand barrel in the world. Long, thick, fast — it throws a complete tube from takeoff to exit on a good south swell. This is an advanced wave. The takeoff is steep, the barrel is fast, and the reef is shallow. Not for beginners. If you're a confident barrel rider, this is the reason you came to Mentawai.
3. Telescopes — The Crowd Pleaser
Telescopes is a right reef that suits all levels. Longer walls, a forgiving take-off zone, and a predictable shape make this a go-to break when we want everyone in the water and having fun. Works on almost any southwest swell. A great morning warm-up break before heading to the bigger waves.
4. Beng Beng — Best for Beginners
Two peaks — left and right — that offer long, gentle rides on a southwest swell. Beng Beng is where we take first-timers and returning surfers who want to build confidence. The wave breaks over a deep-enough reef to be forgiving, and the rides are long enough to practice everything from bottom turns to cutbacks. Ideal for beginner to intermediate surfers.
5. Ebay — Reliable in Any Swell
One of the most consistent breaks in the region. Ebay is a right reef that picks up almost any swell and produces a clean, mellow wave. It's not the most exciting break on the list, but when other spots are too big or too small, Ebay is almost always working. Great for beginner to intermediate surfers looking for volume and fun.
6. Rifles — Power and Precision Required
A heavy, shallow left barrel. Rifles fires on a strong southwest swell and produces some of the thickest tubes in Mentawai. The entry is fast and the reef is unforgiving. This break is strictly for experienced barrel riders who can handle power and depth. On the right day, the barrels here are extraordinary.
7. Lances Left & Lances Right — Two Waves, One Channel
Lances Left is a long, perfect left-hand barrel that rivals HT's on a good swell — less crowded, equally heavy. Lances Right is a playful right reef in the same channel, ideal for intermediate surfers who want variety. Both breaks share the same paddle-out channel, making it easy to switch between them. We often split groups here so everyone surfs their right wave.
8. Bembeng — Johan's Personal Favourite for All Levels
Bembeng has both left and right options on long-period southwest swell. The wave is gentler than Macaronis or HT's but still produces quality rides. I recommend this break for mixed-ability groups — beginners can ride the inside section while more experienced surfers work the outside. On a solid swell, the left section produces a surprisingly powerful barrel.
9. Katiet — Long Point Rides
Katiet is a right point break that produces some of the longest rides in Mentawai on a south swell. Multiple sections connect on a good day, giving you a wave that lasts 200+ metres. Suitable for all levels — the outside is for advanced surfers chasing the full point ride, while the inside section is mellow enough for beginners to enjoy.
Mentawai Surf Season: Month by Month
The Mentawai surf season runs April through October. Southern Ocean swells arrive consistently from south and southwest during this window, driven by cyclones and low-pressure systems tracking across the Southern Ocean.

Peak season begins. Big, powerful.

Gear, Boards & What to Bring
Mentawai breaks are reef waves. Most require a shortboard (6'0"–6'8") for the performance breaks, and a slightly larger board (6'6"–7'2") for mellow days and beginner spots. Longboards work well at Bembeng, Ebay, and Katiet.
Surfboard rental via certified partner: Rp 200,000–350,000 per day. If you bring your own board, the ferry surcharge is NOT included in package prices. We recommend bringing at least two boards if possible — reef breaks can be hard on equipment.
Essential Gear Checklist
Must bring: Reef booties (reef shoes), reef-safe sunscreen, rash guard (long sleeve for reef protection), leash (6ft for shortboard, 8–9ft for longboard), fins kit (in case airline takes yours), fin key and wax.
Recommended: Helmet for shallow breaks (HT's, Rifles, Bank Vaults), ding repair kit, extra fins, board bag with padding.
Don't bother bringing: Wetsuit (water is 28–30°C year-round), booties above ankle height, heavy luggage — you'll be on a boat every day.
