All Mentawai tribe tours are available to solo travellers. Solo pricing reflects the fixed costs of guide, transport, permits, and accommodation that apply regardless of group size.

Solo Surf Camp

The Mentawai Guesthouse Surf Camp (USD 950/person, 7 days) has a minimum of 2 pax. Solo surfers are warmly welcomed — Andrian works to match solo bookings with other guests travelling at a similar time. If no match is available, the camp can run solo at a small additional cost. What Solo Looks Like in Practice

On a tribe tour, solo travel is arguably the richest version of the experience. Andrian, or a local Mentawai guide, is with you for the entire trip — you have a personal guide, not a group leader managing ten people. Conversations with the Sikerei shaman are translated fully and personally. You move at your own pace. There are no compromise decisions about activities.

In the tribal village, you will sleep in the Uma longhouse with the host family. You are not alone — you are a temporary part of the community. That dynamic is the same whether you arrive solo or with a group of four.

Is Mentawai Safe for Solo Travellers?

Yes. Mentawai is one of the genuinely safe remote destinations in Indonesia. There are no crocodiles, bears, or tigers. The Mentawai communities are welcoming and accustomed to foreign visitors. Crime is extremely rare on Siberut Island.

The main practical safety considerations for solo travellers are the same as any remote destination:

From Padang to Mentawai — Solo Logistics

The Mentawai Fast ferry departs from Muaro Padang on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 07:00. The crossing takes 3–6 hours depending on weather and sea conditions.
