West Sumatra Travel Guide

Beyond the beaches: Padang's culture, food, and how to connect a Sumatra trip with Mentawai Islands. Regional guide for serious travelers.

West Sumatra and Mentawai Islands regional landscape

West Sumatra: The Gateway Region

West Sumatra is the overlooked region. Bali gets the Instagram treatment, Java gets the history, but West Sumatra—particularly Padang, the capital—is where Indonesia actually tastes like itself. Minangkabau culture, world-class cuisine, lush highlands, and direct access to Mentawai Islands.

If you are planning a Mentawai trip, you are already flying into Padang. But most travelers skip it. That is a mistake. Spend 2-3 days here, understand the gateway, then hit the islands with context.

Padang: The Capital

Why Padang Matters

Population: ~900,000. Port city, seafood capital, seat of Minangkabau culture. Port Muaro Padang is where you board the ferry to Mentawai (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday at 8:00 AM).

Boat journey to Mentawai Islands from Padang, West Sumatra

Unlike Bali's manufactured tourism, Padang is not built for Western visitors. That is the appeal. You will see Indonesian urban life, not a resort. Expect chaos: traffic, street food stalls, loud markets.

What to Do in Padang (2-3 Days)

Day 1 (Padang): Arrive, rest, explore Jalan Diponegoro (street food paradise). Eat rendang, soto Padang, fried snacks. Stay in guesthouse near harbor (cheaper, authentic).

Day 2 (Padang/Bukittinggi): Museum morning, minibus to Bukittinggi afternoon.

Day 3 (Harau/Padang): Harau Canyon hike, return to Padang evening.

Food: The Real Draw

Minangkabau cuisine is one of Indonesia's great food traditions—spice-forward, layered, assertive. Unlike Bali's tourist-diluted food, Padang's street food tastes like it always has.

Must-try dishes: Rendang (meat cooked in coconut and spices—slow, rich). Soto Padang (spiced soup with offal). Gulai tambusu (fish egg curry). Sambal Padang (chili paste that will change your life). Eat at warung (street stalls), not restaurants. Prices: USD 2-4 per meal.
