Before You Go

When is the best time to surf in Mentawai? +
April to October is the best time. Peak season is June through September when south and southwest swells from the Southern Ocean are most consistent and powerful. Outside this window surf is smaller, but you'll find fewer crowds and calmer conditions for beginners.
What skill level do I need to surf Mentawai? +
All surf levels are welcome at Pulau Asli Tour. Beginners and intermediate surfers go to Bembeng, Ebay, Telescopes, and Katiet — mellow, forgiving reefs. Advanced surfers can access HT's, Rifles, Macaronis, and Bank Vaults. Johan guides each group to the right break every morning based on conditions and skill.
How do I get to Mentawai from Padang? +
Fly into Padang (Minangkabau International Airport / PDG), then take the public ferry from Muaro Padang port to Siberut Island. Ferries depart Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 07:00. Crossing takes 3–6 hours depending on weather and sea conditions. Pulau Asli Tour arranges all ground transfers and logistics from Padang.
Do I need a visa to surf in Mentawai? +
Most nationalities (EU, USA, Australia, UK, and 90+ others) receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in Indonesia, extendable to 60 days. Mentawai Islands are part of Indonesia — no additional permit is required for surfing. A marine park surf tax of Rp 2,000,000 (~USD 125–130) applies and is included in all Pulau Asli Tour packages.
What is the malaria risk for surfers in Mentawai? +
Malaria risk exists in Mentawai. Consult a travel medicine doctor before your trip for current prophylaxis recommendations. All Pulau Asli Tour camps provide mosquito nets. Bring DEET-based insect repellent. Most guests who take basic precautions have no issues — this is a standard tropical destination risk.

The Waves

What surf breaks can I access from Pulau Asli Tour camps? +
All 15 major Mentawai surf breaks are accessible by speedboat, 5–30 minutes from camp. Breaks include Macaronis, HT's (Hollow Trees), Telescopes, Beng Beng, Pitstops, Rifles, Scarecrows, Bank Vaults, Ebay, Nipussi, Lances Left, Lances Right, Bembeng, Katiet, and Indicators. See our full surf breaks guide for details on each wave.
How crowded are the breaks? +
Famous breaks like HT's and Macaronis can get busy during peak season (June–September), especially midday. We paddle out early — first session at 07:00 to catch glass-off before crowds arrive. Less-known breaks like Nipussi, Indicators, and Scarecrows are consistently quiet. Johan monitors lineups daily and redirects groups to uncrowded alternatives.
Are there dangerous waves in Mentawai? +
Yes. HT's (Hollow Trees), Rifles, Bank Vaults, and Lances Left are heavy, fast reef breaks — serious wipeouts over shallow coral are possible. These breaks are only recommended for experienced surfers on appropriate swell conditions. Johan assesses conditions every morning and will not send guests to heavy breaks when it's inappropriate. We prioritize your safety.
What happens on flat days when there are no waves? +
Flat days do happen, mostly November–March or during transitional weather. On flat days: snorkel the reef, go fishing with local fishermen, visit a nearby village, do a half-day jungle walk, or simply rest. During peak season (June–September) genuine flat days are very rare. We cannot guarantee waves on specific days.
Is Mentawai surfing safe for intermediate surfers? +
Absolutely. Telescopes, Beng Beng, Scarecrows, Lances Right, Nipussi, and Indicators are excellent for intermediate surfers. Johan will not take intermediate surfers to HT's or Rifles on large swells. You'll still get quality waves every day — Mentawai has something for every level.

Gear & Boards

Should I bring my own surfboard? +
Yes — bring at least two boards if you can. Reef breaks can ding boards, and having a spare keeps you in the water. Recommended: one shortboard (6'0"–6'8") and one slightly larger board (6'6"–7'2") for mellow days. Surfboard rental is available via certified partner at Rp 200,000–350,000 per day. If you bring your own board, the ferry surcharge is NOT included in package prices.
What is the surfboard rental cost in Mentawai? +
Surfboard rental via certified partner: Rp 200,000–350,000 per day depending on board type and size. We recommend booking board rental in advance through Pulau Asli Tour so we can confirm availability. Rental boards are checked and maintained regularly.
What should I pack for a Mentawai surf trip? +
Essential: Reef booties (reef shoes), long-sleeve rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen SPF 50+, leash (6ft shortboard / 9ft longboard), spare fins, fin key, wax. Recommended: Surf helmet for heavy breaks, ding repair kit, waterproof bag. Skip: Wetsuit (water is 28–30°C year-round), heavy luggage — you're on a boat daily.
Are wax and fins available to buy in Mentawai? +
Selection is limited in Mentawai. Bring enough wax for your full trip (tropical blend). Fins are sometimes available for sale or temporary use at camps, but don't rely on it. Buy everything you need in Padang or before you fly in — Padang has surf shops with reasonable stock.

Camp & Daily Life

What camp options are available? +
Three options: Premium Bungalows (USD 1,350/person, AC, WiFi, beachfront, min 4 pax), Affordable Camp (USD 1,000/person, fan, WiFi, beachfront, min 4 pax), Guesthouse (USD 850/person, fan, coastal, min 2 pax, sampan required to reach speedboat). All camps include meals, daily boat access, and guide support. No hot water at any camp.
What is a typical day at Mentawai surf camp? +
06:00 wake up — Johan checks swell and wind. 06:30 breakfast. 07:00 boat out to first break (glass-off is the best surf of the day). 2–3 sessions at different breaks, guided by Johan's daily swell read. Back to camp for lunch and rest. Optional afternoon session when conditions are right. Dinner and next-day planning by 20:00.
What food is available at camp? +
All camps provide local and Western meals on request — rice, fish, vegetables, eggs, fruit. Portions are large (you're surfing 5+ hours a day). Dietary requirements (vegetarian, gluten-free) can be accommodated with advance notice. Tell us at booking and we'll coordinate with the camp kitchen.
Is there WiFi at Mentawai surf camps? +
Premium and Affordable camps have WiFi (quality varies by weather and location). The Guesthouse option does not have WiFi. Mobile signal is limited on the island — most guests buy a local SIM (Telkomsel) in Padang for basic connectivity. Expect this to be a digital detox trip.

Can I combine surfing and tribe tours in one Mentawai trip? +
Surfing and tribe tours cannot be done on the same day. The surf camp is on a small coastal island; the tribe villages are near Siberut National Park — approximately 3 hours apart by combined land and sea travel. On a longer trip (10+ days) you can plan separate days for each experience. Contact us and we'll build an itinerary that covers both.
