The Mentawai tattoo — known as titi in the local language — is widely considered one of the oldest continuous tattoo traditions on Earth. Long predating modern tattooing by thousands of years, the practice is deeply woven into the spiritual belief system of the Mentawai people: Arat Sabulungan, the animist worldview that connects the human body, the spirit world, and the living forest.
Getting a Mentawai tattoo is not a casual tourist activity. It is a culturally meaningful act that the community takes seriously, and which requires community approval, preparation, and the right context. On a Pulau Asli Tour tribe tour, Andrian coordinates the request through the proper channels — but only for guests who have asked in advance and understand what it involves.
For the Mentawai people, the body is a living connection between the physical and spirit worlds. The tattoo — applied from adolescence onwards — marks identity, status, and spiritual protection. Different motifs carry different meanings:
Represent the surrounding ocean and the flow of life — connection to the sea that encircles Siberut Island and provides sustenance for the community.
Symbolise connection to the forest — the source of food, medicine, shelter, and spiritual power for the Mentawai people.
Specific animals carry protective or identity significance. Gibbons, deer, and birds appear in tattoo patterns as totemic symbols linked to clan identity.
Often represent passage and status — marking life transitions such as hunting achievements, community roles, or ceremonial rites of passage.
The Sikerei shaman plays a central role in the tattooing process — not as the tattooist necessarily, but as the spiritual authority who determines the appropriate symbols for each individual. The process is not simply aesthetic. It is, within the Mentawai worldview, a spiritual act.
Mentawai tattoos are applied using traditional tools: a sharpened implement (historically made from bone or thorn, now sometimes a sharpened implement with natural ink) tapped into the skin by a wooden mallet in a rhythmic motion. There is no electric machine. The result is a slightly softer line than modern tattooing, with a texture and depth that cannot be replicated by machine.
The process takes longer than modern tattooing and requires more aftercare. The community practitioner will advise on care during your stay. Healing time is similar to any tattoo — several weeks for full healing.
The traditional Mentawai tattoo is available as a paid add-on to any tribe tour package. It is not included in the standard tour price. The cost is separate and paid directly to the community practitioner.
Pricing varies based on the size and complexity of the design. A small motif may take 1–2 hours; a larger design covering the arm or shoulder takes longer and costs more. Andrian provides exact pricing at time of booking request — rates are set by the community, not by Pulau Asli Tour.
You must mention the tattoo request when booking your tribe tour — not on arrival. This allows Andrian to coordinate community approval and confirm practitioner availability in advance.
Andrian will ask about your reasons for wanting the tattoo and what themes or motifs resonate with you. This information is shared with the Sikerei shaman, who considers it as part of the design process.
The request is subject to community availability and the Sikerei's assessment. The community reserves the right to decline if the timing or circumstances are not appropriate — this is respected without exception.
Conducted during the tribe tour — usually on Day 2 or 3, once the guest has been introduced to the community and built rapport. The Sikerei may conduct a brief ritual before beginning. Allow several hours.
Community practitioners provide aftercare instructions. Bring basic antiseptic and clean bandaging. Avoid swimming for 48–72 hours after the tattoo. Andrian will advise on any specific care requirements.
The tattoo experience requires sufficient time within the community — at minimum, the 4-Day Explorer gives enough days to build rapport and complete the process. The 5-Day Cultural Immersion or longer is strongly recommended if the tattoo is a primary goal of your visit — it allows time for the process, healing, and continued engagement with the community.
Tell Andrian you want a traditional Mentawai tattoo when you message. He will confirm availability and coordinate everything in advance.
