The Mentawai tribe is an indigenous community living on Siberut Island, West Sumatra, known for animist Sikerei shamans, UMA longhouses, and traditional tattoo art. Visiting requires permits at both government and tribal chief level. Pulau Asli Tour offers 3–7 day packages from USD 215/person, led by Andrian Salis, a 3rd-generation Mentawai veteran.
What is Mentawai Tribe Culture?
The Mentawai people are an indigenous group living on the Mentawai Islands — Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, and South Pagai — off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. With a population of approximately 64,000, they are one of Southeast Asia's oldest surviving cultures, isolated from mainland Sumatra for nearly 500,000 years.
Geographic Context
Mentawai Archipelago has 4 main islands: Siberut (largest), Sipora, North Pagai (Pagai Utara), and South Pagai (Pagai Selatan). Authentic Mentawai tribe culture — Sikerei shamans, UMA longhouses, traditional ceremonies — exists only on Siberut Island. All Pulau Asli Tour tribe experiences take place on Siberut.
The Mentawai follow an animist belief system — every element of the forest, river, and sky is inhabited by spirits (sanitu). Their spiritual leaders, the Sikerei (shamans), are the bridge between community and spirit world. Tattoos (titi) are permanent records of spiritual identity. Clothing is made from bark cloth. Houses are traditional UMA longhouses shared by extended families.
Siberut Island was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981 — recognizing both ecological and cultural significance. The community forests where Pulau Asli Tour operates directly border the 403,000-hectare national park.

Who Are the Sikerei?
The Sikerei are the shamans of the Mentawai people — not simply religious leaders but the community's healers, mediators, ecological guides, and oral historians. A person becomes Sikerei through years of apprenticeship, not inheritance.
Sikerei communicate with spirits through trance, song, and ritual. They diagnose illness as spiritual imbalance and restore it through ceremony. They know which forest plants heal, which are dangerous, and which summon which spirits. Their knowledge is entirely oral — passed master to apprentice over generations.
On Pulau Asli Tour, you are accommodated with a host family that includes a practicing Sikerei. Andrian facilitates genuine conversation and bridges language and cultural gaps. Ceremonies are never staged.
