Mentawai Weather by Month: What to Expect All Year

Mentawai weather is one of the most common questions I receive from guests planning their first trip. The short answer: there are two seasons — a dry season (April–October) that is peak time for surfing, and a wet season (November–March) when the NW monsoon brings heavier rain and onshore winds. But here is what most travel sites miss: tribe cultural tours run perfectly year-round, and Mentawai never gets cold. Temperature stays between 28–32°C every single month of the year.

Mentawai Weather — Quick Facts

  • Temperature year-round: 28–32°C (82–90°F)
  • Surf season (dry): April – October (SE offshore winds, consistent SW swell)
  • Wet season: November – March (NW onshore, higher rainfall)
  • Peak surf months: June, July, August
  • Tribe tours: year-round, all 12 months
  • Sea water temperature: 27–29°C year-round — no wetsuit needed
  • Typhoons / cyclones: None — Mentawai is not in a typhoon belt

The Two Seasons: Dry vs. Wet in Mentawai

Mentawai sits between 1 and 3 degrees south of the equator, in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra. Like all equatorial islands, it is governed by the monsoon cycle rather than the four-season calendar familiar to visitors from Europe, North America, or Australia.

Dry Season (April–October): The Southeast (SE) trade winds dominate, blowing offshore across Mentawai's west-facing reef breaks. This creates the clean, groomed wave faces that have made breaks like Macaronis, Rifles, and Playgrounds world-famous. Rainfall is lower, skies are clearer, and South Indian Ocean swells deliver consistent wave energy. This is prime surf season.

Wet Season (November–March): The NW monsoon winds reverse direction and blow onshore, making most west-coast breaks messy and less rideable. Rainfall increases significantly — December and January are the wettest months. Seas are rougher and ferry crossings can be slower. However, the forest on Siberut Island becomes even more spectacular, rivers run fuller, and tribe tours continue without interruption.

Surf Season (April–October): What Makes It So Good

The SE trade winds are the key. Mentawai's best surf breaks — Macaronis, Rifles, Playgrounds, Lances Left, Hollow Trees, Bintang — all face west or southwest. When SE winds blow, they blow from behind, creating the clean, offshore conditions that make waves stand up tall and peel perfectly. Without offshore winds, even a powerful swell can produce messy, unrideable conditions.

Swell originates from Southern Ocean storms tracking north of Antarctica between May and September. These storms generate long-period SW and SSW groundswells that travel thousands of kilometres before hitting Mentawai's outer reefs with full force. Swell periods of 12–18 seconds are common during peak season — this is what creates the long, mechanical walls that Mentawai is famous for worldwide.

June, July, and August are the most consistent months — highest swell frequency, most reliable offshore winds, and the driest skies. They are also the busiest. April, May, and September offer nearly as good conditions with fewer crowds. All Pulau Asli Tour surf camp packages run at the same price year-round — there are no peak-season surcharges.

Surf breaks on Siberut are 5–30 minutes from camp by speedboat. For a detailed breakdown of each break and its ideal conditions, see our Mentawai surf breaks guide.

Wet Season (November–March): When to Still Visit

The NW monsoon brings heavier rain and onshore winds from November through March. For surf, this means reduced wave quality across most of Mentawai's west-coast breaks. NW winds blow into the faces of waves that normally stand up clean under SE offshores — the result is choppier, less-groomed conditions. Swells are also less consistent, as Southern Ocean storm activity decreases over this period.

However, the wet season is not a write-off. March and November are shoulder months when conditions fluctuate — a strong Southern Ocean swell combined with a brief SE window can produce excellent surf even in these months. Experienced surfers willing to be flexible sometimes get remarkable uncrowded sessions in the shoulders.

For tribe tours, the wet season is a fully valid time to visit. Siberut Island's jungle does not close in the rain — if anything, the forest feels more alive. Rivers run with more power, the canopy is deeper green, and the authentic village life of the Mentawai people continues exactly as it always has. All tribe tour packages (3-day through 7-day) run year-round at the same pricing.

One important note for wet season travel: the ferry from Muaro Padang (departing Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) takes 3–6 hours depending on weather and sea conditions. Rougher wet-season seas can push crossing time closer to 6 hours. Build a buffer day in Padang when planning a December–February trip.

Temperature, Humidity & Sea Conditions Year-Round

Mentawai does not have a cold season. The islands sit in one of the warmest ocean basins on Earth. Here is what to expect physically throughout the year:

  • Air temperature: 28–32°C (82–90°F) year-round, day and night rarely dropping below 24°C
  • Humidity: 80–90% year-round — it is always humid; moisture-wicking clothing is essential
  • Sea water temperature: 27–29°C year-round — no wetsuit required for most surfers (a 1mm vest is optional for early mornings)
  • UV Index: Extreme (9–11+) in dry season clear skies — SPF 50+ sunscreen is not optional
  • Wind: SE 10–20 knots in dry season; NW variable 5–25 knots in wet season

Because of the constant heat and humidity, hydration is critical on both surf and jungle days. All Pulau Asli Tour camps provide safe drinking water. Bring a reusable 1-litre water bottle. Read our full Mentawai FAQ for health and preparation details.

How Weather Should Affect Your Trip Planning

Based on 15 years living and guiding in Mentawai, here is my honest advice by traveller type:

Surfer (intermediate to advanced)

Target April–October. June–August for maximum consistency. April, May, and September for uncrowded sessions with near-peak wave quality. Avoid December–February unless you specifically want off-peak pricing and are happy to deal with variable conditions.

Surfer (beginner)

April and May are ideal — smaller early-season swells, offshore winds, warm water, and slightly less intense sun. Our surf camps welcome all levels. Coaches are available. Beginners should avoid June–August when swell size peaks.

Tribe tour traveller

Any month works. Tribe cultural tours on Siberut are not meaningfully affected by rain — the forest trek continues and tribal life carries on. If you want to combine a short surf session with your tribe trip, note that surfing and tribe tours cannot be done on the same day (locations are approximately 3 hours apart). Choose your priority accordingly.

Both (surf + tribe on separate days)

A 7-day itinerary allows time for both. The 5–7 day tribe packages can be combined back-to-back with a surf camp stay if you build enough days. The hybrid approach needs careful logistics — message me on WhatsApp to design the right itinerary for your dates.

All Pulau Asli Tour prices remain the same year-round — there are no wet season discounts or dry season surcharges. Solo travelers are welcome on all packages. Small group only (max 8). 50% deposit to confirm your booking. See booking details here.

Frequently Asked Questions: Mentawai Weather

What is the best season to visit Mentawai?

The best season for surfing is April to October, with June–August as the peak months — consistent SW swell and SE offshore winds create Mentawai's world-class wave conditions. For tribe cultural tours, any month works well as forest trekking is largely unaffected by rain. Prices are the same year-round with Pulau Asli Tour.

What is the wettest month in Mentawai?

December and January are typically the wettest months, with the heaviest rainfall during the NW monsoon. February also receives very high rainfall. Even during the dry season Mentawai receives some rain — the difference is in frequency and intensity. Year-round humidity stays above 80%, so the islands always feel lush and tropical.

Does rain affect Mentawai tribe tours?

Rain has minimal impact on tribe tours. Forest trekking on Siberut Island continues safely in wet conditions — trails are well-established and the jungle canopy provides natural shelter. Tribe tours operate year-round at the same pricing. The wet season can enhance the experience with fuller rivers, richer greenery, and an even more immersive jungle atmosphere.

What temperature is Mentawai year-round?

Mentawai maintains a consistent tropical temperature of 28–32°C (82–90°F) year-round. Humidity stays at 80–90%. Nighttime temperatures drop to around 24–26°C. Sea water temperature is a warm 27–29°C throughout the year — no wetsuit is needed for surfing or swimming, making every month comfortable for water-based activities.

Is Mentawai affected by typhoons or cyclones?

No. Mentawai lies just 1–3 degrees south of the equator and is not in a typhoon or cyclone belt. The main weather pattern is the monsoon cycle, not tropical cyclones. The powerful swells that hit Mentawai's reefs are generated by distant Southern Ocean storms — not local cyclones — delivering consistent, long-period groundswell to the breaks.
