Mentawai is famous for its surf. But the islands hold far more than reef breaks. For non-surfers, travel partners, or surfers looking for a rest-day experience, Mentawai offers jungle encounters, living tribal culture, endemic wildlife, and coastal exploration that most travellers never see. Here are 8 activities worth your time — all available through Pulau Asli Tour.
The most immersive non-surf experience in Mentawai. Stay with a Sikerei shaman family, sleep in a traditional UMA longhouse, join jungle treks, and witness ceremonial practices. Tours run 3–7 days. This is Siberut's greatest offering — and it has nothing to do with waves.
The community forests directly border the 403,000-hectare Siberut National Park — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Multi-day jungle treks through primary rainforest, river crossings, and canopy walks. Led by Andrian or a local ranger guide.
Siberut Island is home to four primates found nowhere else on Earth: the Kloss gibbon, Mentawai macaque, Mentawai langur, and pig-tailed snub-nosed monkey. Wildlife spotting is possible but not guaranteed — deep forest treks increase your chances. Available as a paid add-on.
The same reef systems that produce world-class surf also support some of West Sumatra's best snorkelling — coral gardens, reef fish, and clear tropical water. Equipment can be arranged; bring your own mask for the best fit. Ask Andrian to coordinate a snorkel day between surf sessions.
Sago is the staple food of the Mentawai people — harvested from palm trunks and processed by hand into flour. Joining a sago processing session is one of the most tactile, memorable cultural experiences on the island. Usually included in tribe tour itineraries or available as a day activity.
Mentawai people craft clothing from the inner bark of specific forest trees — a technique passed down through generations. Guests can participate in the pounding and softening process under guidance from community members. A craft session that leaves you with a genuine piece of Mentawai material culture.
Siberut Island is surrounded by smaller islands, sandbars, and uninhabited coastline. Speedboat day trips to neighbouring islets — white sand beaches, shallow lagoons, local fishing villages. A change of pace between forest and surf days.
One of the world's oldest continuous tattoo traditions — permanent, hand-tapped, spiritually significant. Available as a paid add-on on tribe tours. Must be requested at time of booking. Not suitable as a spontaneous decision — the process and meaning deserve proper preparation. Full guide →
Technically yes — the surf camp package is designed for surfers, but a non-surfing travel partner can join and fill their days with snorkelling, island exploration, and beach time while the group surfs. However, for a non-surfer wanting the full Mentawai experience, a tribe cultural tour is a far richer use of your time on the island.
Yes — many guests do both. We recommend at least 10 days total: several days of surf camp followed by a 3–5 day tribe tour (or vice versa). The two experiences are physically separate — the surf camp is on the coastal side of Siberut, the tribal villages are deeper in the island's interior. Andrian coordinates all logistics between the two.
